HIstory
The building that is now Uncommon Coffee Roasters (used to be be known as Uncommon Grounds) was not always a coffee shop and bakery. It started out as a home for Daniel Plummer in 1836. He was a shipbuilder and carpenter who built a house on the site and lived in it until 1849. The building’s structure and size changed when Wayne Coates and his family took residence there. In addition to the Coates living there, they opened a drug store. Later, Dr. H. E. Kreager lived and worked there. Kreager was the president of Saugatuck from 1924 to 1933. It was also said he opened a doctor’s office in the house as well. It was in the 80s when the building became a small family owned restaurant. Palazzolo’s had a variety of italian dishes and gelato. The space was small with only a small seating area outside and most of the food was take out, but overall attracted many families.Uncommon Coffee Roasters has been open and running since 1994. The first building on the Uncommon Coffee Roasters site has changed in structure, style, and size many times. These changes over time have slowly shaped it into the building we know today.
Poetry
A busy Day
Saturday afternoon, and it’s busy I’m scrambling to take orders fast enough, I’m getting dizzy There’s a line that is a mile long The radio is playing but you can’t hear the song Everyone’s talking at once, until it’s just a crowd of noise I hand someone their coffee, I tell them to enjoy I was here and then I was there, it like I was everywhere Go take this order, clean off that table, go get more chairs I was rapidly running around the room Its been forever, I assume I look at the clock, I still have hours until closing time I scrub the table of its grime One by one, people begin to leave I roll my sleeves The people are gone I can hear the people on the radio now, it rambles on I turn it off and began to clean the small cafe I work as fast as a lightning so I can soon get away The only sound is the sound of me sweeping I’m tired and feel like sleeping I walk outside, and stand beneath the trees there’s a gentle breeze The day is done and I am now at ease |
The History Poem
I began as a house
Just a small house
I was about as big
as a large room
Built by Daniel Plummer
I was his until another family took residence
They made a lot of changes
Until I was like a whole new building
The Coates family lived here
They used me as a house
A small drug store as well
They too eventually left
My structure and style was changed again
Someone new moved in
Dr. Kreager was his name
He was important to the town
By now, I was a whole new building
A small restaurant to be exact
With food that would melt in your mouth
Desserts that would make your taste buds explode
As if now, I’ve been changed and changed again
It shaped me into the building I am now
I am known for my outstanding coffee and tea
For my delicious baked goods
Today I am known as Uncommon Coffee Roasters
I began as a house
Just a small house
I was about as big
